College Hill

Donald “Don” Smyth, age 93, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025 surrounded by family. A loving dad and devoted husband, Don was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Donald Eugene Smyth was born on January 9, 1932 in Cincinnati to Arthur Thomas Smyth and Marian Burnedette Holtman Smyth. Upon returning from his service with the US Army in Korea, Don completed his degree at the University of Cincinnati and had a long career as a government employee. On July 30, 1966, Don married the love of his life, Patricia Marie Dwyer at St. Bartholomew Church in Cincinnati. Don and Pat met on a riverboat cruise and spent many years together enjoying fun on the Ohio river, boating and water skiing with family and friends. Together they had four children, David, Ann, Donna and Jill. Don was a kind soul with a broad smile and hearty laugh who was committed to his family, constantly making time to visit them near and far to help with the care of his eleven grandchildren. Don followed Christ and lived a life of faith, evident in his service to others, love of scripture, and commitment to daily prayer. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Pat, his parents, Arthur and Marian, his two sisters Rosemary Smyth Kuhlmann and Arlene Smyth Kenning. He is survived by brother Neal Smyth of Cincinnati, his son David Smyth (wife Shelley, grandchildren Lydia, Noah and Joel) of Indianapolis, and daughters Ann Marie Healing (husband Dave, grandchildren Joshua & Abigail) of Chicago, Donna Hutchinson-Smyth (husband Jeff, grandsons Soren & Quinn) of Cincinnati and Jill Hicks (husband Jonathan, grandchildren Elijah, Reuben, Kalilah and Pearl) of Nada, KY, and by many nieces, nephews and their families. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 29th at Ohio Living Llanfair’s Margaret Jean Wells Chapel, 1701 Llanfair Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45224. Visitation will begin at 10am, service will begin at 11:30 followed by a lunch reception. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to an organization where his children serve: David and Shelley serve with Cru, a christian ministry to college students; Ann serves with Breakthrough, a nonprofit serving those experiencing poverty in Chicago.
