(Angi), stepdaughter, Vanessa Walburg, grandson, Joshua Paul Torbeck, her brother Tom (Tater); and, sisters-in-law Ann Kruse and Jane Sullivan. “Aunt Betty” had a following of so many nieces and nephews which she adored; and, then down along their ranks. In particular, Kathleen (Joe), Donna (Greg), Colleen (Dave), Brian (Kathy), Patrick T. (Amy), Sharon (Joe), Lynne (Tom), and Sally. Close family friends of the Kennedy’s, Ferrara’s, Coronado’s, Zamarripa’s, and the Ladies of Shadow Canyon.
Betty was born in Cincinnati and attended Seton High School and some college at Mount St. Joe. She also lived in Philadelphia, St. Louis, Lawrenceburg, and San Antonio. In her early career, Betty worked at the Cincinnati Enquirer, a trucking company, and read books for the blind on the radio; and, then later in life served as the Director of the Kidney Foundation in St. Louis, Writer/Editor of the Villa Duchesne Villa Views Magazine; and, chief of staff for the National Shoe Travelers Assoc. She had a very engaging voice, both in writing and in speech.
Betty was the consummate Mother – never missed a game. Always involved -- host/entertaining. She was a great chef and mean little artist with watercolors and needlepoint. She adored the finer arts and gardening. She loved to travel. She was an avid book reader; and, crossword puzzle solver. She was extremely bright and a great storyteller – such stories will be sorely missed. Betty was inclusive; and, into diversity way before its time. Betty welcomed All and was simply amazing in this regard.
Her last story is – Be An Over-Achiever, be Proud; but, also be Kind & Generous along the way – Teach it forward & Take Time to Smell the Roses.
In Lieu of Flowers, please make a tax-deductible donation to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in memory of Elizabeth J. Crean. Betty was an advocate; and, fought for years for disabled rights and for Lisa.
