Vicki Lee Welsh (nee Thornburg), 72, Nov. 23, 2024, Sayler Park. Beloved wife of Larry Carl Welsh, devoted mother of Elizabeth Reeves (Eric), loving grandmother of Hayden & Riley Reeves, beloved daughter of Barbara Ann (nee Duty) & the late David Eugene Thornburg, dear sister of Tami Gibson; Terry, Mark & Dana Thornburg.
Vicki grew up in Miami Heights, and as a self-proclaimed “tomboy,” loved spending time outdoors. She enjoyed hiking and creek walking with her canteen, playing community softball and volleyball.
Vicki graduated from Taylor High School in 1970 where she was active with drama, choir, and the school newspaper. This is where she was swept off her feet by the love of her life and future husband, Larry. Larry and Vicki were wed on June 12, 1976 and honeymooned on Mackinaw Island. Her family would go on to vacation there annually for many years.
Vicki received her teaching degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph and just recently became a Royal Mountee in 2024 (Alum of 50 years). She held positions with Cincinnati Public Schools at Sawyer Junior High School, Hughes High School and Walnut Hills High School teaching English, Speech and Theater. In addition to her teaching positions, Vicki worked as a Teacher Probation Officer for the Hamilton County Juvenile Court. Later she directed drama at Oak Hills High School and served as the Preschool Administrator at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Westwood United Methodist Church. She also spent time volunteering for AFS International Student Exchange Program and served meals at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church downtown.
Her latter years were spent as an Associate with the Sisters of Charity since 2003. Here she interviewed many inspiring women to profile in their Intercom newsletter, sat Vigil Ministry for those departing, and so loved reading to dear friends. Vicki was an advocate for worker’s justice and investing in families. She was a supporter of Price Hill Will and Santa Maria Community Services. Vicki was fond of cooking, but was best known by family for her deviled eggs. She liked gardening both flowers and herbs, reading, attending book club, and singing. She sang for others in high school, college, church, and with the Sisters of Charity, but sang for family ad libitum.
Well-traveled and well-versed, Vicki’s vibrant and vivacious character garnered countless friends throughout her life. Some of note are “The Cleves Girls”, Carol Frey and Cheryl Zaidan, her best college friends, the Sisters of Charity and fellow Associates, and Book Club pals. Vicki was tirelessly benevolent and selfless towards her family, friends, and humanity at large. She felt passionate about people connecting to develop relationships with one another. But above all her other interests and work, Vicki valued and focused on family as her priority. She will be missed, ever loved, and treasured by so many.
